Special Olympics Kansas and Special Olympics Missouri would like to invite new and returning athletes and families to participate in our next Year-Round Health and Fitness Program: the 2021 Grow a Garden Program. The 2021 Grow a Garden Program will focus on the Nutritional aspect of Fit 5. This program will enable athletes to grow healthy foods, no matter their environment, and also strengthen our healthy eating habits. The program is sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, the CDC, Health Forward, and is in partnership with the Kansas State Research and Extension Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed).

ENROLLMENT – ONLINE ONLY

INDIVIDUAL/UNIFIED TEAM/FAMILY REGISTRATION

1. Be or select a Challenge Coordinator (18+) for managing the challenge paperwork and keeping the team motivated!
2. Unified Teams must contain at least 1 Athlete and 1 Unified Partner (family member or friends).
3. Unified Teams should have a similar number of athletes and Unified partners and are limited to 5 total participants. If you have more than 5, consider breaking into two or more teams.
4. Forms are to be completed by the individual and/or Challenge Coordinator. Fitness measurements for each participant includes: Resting Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Height and Weight.
5. Individuals and/or Challenge Coordinators will complete a Post-test evaluation with updates on weight, height, blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

This spring, join athletes from across the state of Kansas and Missouri to reach 1,000 points by growing a garden, tracking fruits and vegetables consumed, and sharing healthy meal ideas! Does your team have what it takes to steal the Gold?? The program will begin on May 2nd and end 16 weeks later on August 22, 2021. The Challenge will end with recognition and awards for each of the team’s achievements!

REWARDS AND POINTS SYSTEM

Teams will earn points for eating fruits and vegetables, growing their garden, and posting healthy meal options! Each fruit and vegetable consumed is worth 1 point (up to 5 per day), posting a healthy meal option is 5 points (one post per week), and posting progress on your garden is 30 points (one post per week)! Need a few extra points? Attend the free K-State SNAP-Ed nutrition & cooking series for a bonus 100 points! There will be 6 sessions, once per week!

Medals and Ribbons are awarded to the Top 8 Teams and Health Hero medals will be awarded to all those who participate!

• 1,000 total: Grand Prize Package
• 800 total: Fit 5 Prize Package
• 600 total: Fit 5 Socks
• 400 total: Fit 5 T-Shirt
• 200 total: Fit 5 Tote Bag

INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM

The 2021 Grow a Garden Program can be completed as an individual athlete or with a Unified Team. Unified Teams consist of at least one athlete and one family member or friend. Individuals and Teams will come up with a Team Name, and work together towards an overall healthier lifestyle! Teams will be required to complete the Pre and Post Health Measurements Test before and after the program.

In light of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, one of the best ways to stay healthy is to eat healthy and be outside whether it’s working on a garden or going for a walk!

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE REGISTERED WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS KANSAS OR SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSOURI AND COMPLETE A COVID-19 PARTICIPANT CODE OF CONDUCT AND RISK ASSESSMENT FORM.
