The Global Messenger program is sponsored in part by Mattel and
The Caroline Peine Foundation
The Global Messenger program is designed to teach Special Olympics athletes how to speak in public in front of a variety of audiences. The program pairs a Special Olympics athlete with a speech coach. Coaches learn how to help the athlete prepare a speech to address various types of public groups and corporate audiences on a variety of topics related to Special Olympics.
Athletes are trained with the Gallup StrengthsExplorer tool to identify their personal strengths. Each athlete completed the on-line skills assessment; then, with 12 hours of classroom training, along with their mentor, learned speech building and speaking skills, and developed confidence in their ability to make presentations. Each was required to give a 5-7 minute graduation speech to family and friends that would tell their story.
Global Messengers have been utilized to serve as greeters at events/functions, provide welcome and thank-yous to LETR at Torch Run kick-offs and events, assist with registrations at golf tournaments/events, give TV and radio interviews, and help at Charity Fairs during corporate giving campaigns
